Trellis Develops Shopify Dawn Tailwind Starter Theme

Dawn + TailWindCSS + Prettier Shopify Starter Theme is the Trellis Shopify team’s starting point for new theme projects. It’s an extension of Shopify Dawn including up-to-date best practices, ease of development enhancements, and the option of adding extended features of sections that we’ve found as common asks from our clients – online retail operators and e-commerce marketers (listed below under Currently Offered).

Why should I use Trellis Dawn Tailwind?

2. ADA Compliance
This is a major priority for us and is essential to building for the web. Recently, the US Department of Justice released a guideline on accessibility on the web. While it doesn’t adopt WCAG in its entirety, what is particularly insightful in the DOJ’s guidance statement are the examples of website accessibility barriers it does specifically list:
- Poor color contrast
- Use of color alone to give information
- Lack of text alternatives (“alt text”) on images
- No captions on videos
- Inaccessible online forms
- Mouse-only navigation (lack of keyboard navigation)
These examples are noteworthy because now that the DOJ has specifically identified them as barriers, if left unaddressed, they could trigger legal action, citing a violation of the ADA. As a result, the examples provided should become a minimum priority for any business or organization operating a website.
3. Free and Maintained
We aim to pull down the changes from Dawn every 2 weeks into our repository to keep up to date with the latest released from Shopify. We have a growing 7 developers involved in building out this project and although it’s only been around for a month, it’s already being used as the base theme for 5 enterprise-level builds.
